PING!
Ping! is one of my favorite applications for the iPhone, it allows you to send iPhone-to-iPhone messages including images, over your 3G and wi-fi connection for free. All you have to do is create an identity, you can even link users identities to your iPhone address book.
The Ping application also utilises push notifications, so you receive messages when you are not using the app.
